MWCC has participated in the presentation of the transformation project of the old Clesa factory into an innovation and research center. The Urban Development Area of the Madrid City Council will return activity to the factory and it will become a center that will generate value for the entire city. It will be a space in which culture will be related to science in an enriching mix, highlighting the building that, inaugurated in 1962, is an icon of 20th-century Spanish industrial architecture.
A building inaugurated in 1962 and designed by the architect Alejandro de la Sota that has been in disuse and abandoned for more than a decade and that the Madrid City Council, after recovering its ownership, is going to enhance through an intervention that will turn the space into a pioneering center in Madrid.
Val-Verde regeneration project
The Val-Verde regeneration project has been the winner of the Reinventing Cities contest, promoted by the C40 network of cities of which Madrid is a part and which seeks to reward projects to sustainably recover degraded environments such as the old Clesa factory.
This large industrial space offers a magnificent opportunity to regenerate the urban environment. An ecosystem of innovation and knowledge exchange will be created at the service of the entire city through proposals for scientific and cultural dissemination. The project is committed to R&D&I as the engine of the whole, in collaboration with the Autonomous University of Madrid and the three reference hospitals among which it is physically located and which will benefit from these facilities, Ramón y Cajal, La Paz and the International Ruber.
There are 10,500 square meters of space for R&D&I that will be completed with a cultural center that will have dynamic content, a coworking space, two auditoriums and a cafeteria. A large meeting place is also planned outside, which will be a new urban landmark for both the neighborhood and the district. The cultural area is not a single room, but is related to science throughout the building.
The rehabilitation of this factory, which will have an investment of 30 million euros, will begin in 2023 and will be ready by 2024. The team in charge of bringing the space to life is made up of Kadans Science Partner, the Carlos Rubio Arquitectura studio, Ale Estudio and The Factory.
